ASPHALT PATCHING
Restore and repair your parking lot or driveway with pavement and asphalt services from NWA Seal Coat. We provide professional asphalt refinishing,
repairs, crack sealing and patching in the Northwest Arkansas area.
Pavement made from asphalt is a surfacing material made from stones, sand, and gravel, held together by asphalt cement. It is widely used in a variety of
different applications because of its strength, durability and cost-effectiveness.
Because of it’s flexible properties, longevity and ease of application and repair asphalt surfacing is a very desirable construction method when it’s properly
laid. By establishing and following our plan for asphalt maintenance, you will maximize the lifespan of your asphalt pavement.
Crack Sealing
When water gets underneath the surface of a parking lot, driveway, or walkway it causes major problems,
shortening the lifespan of the asphalt pavement. The primary access point into the asphalt is generally the
cracks that you often see in asphalt that has not been properly maintained. Crack sealing is the first step in
preventing your pavement from deteriorating by preventing water from entering and weakening the base. It also
helps protect the pavement adjacent to the cracks from experiencing expansion and cracking which generally
occurs during the winter months.
Sealing cracks also prevents pebbles, sand and dirt from finding their way into open cracks which can cause
further cracking. Crack sealing is important to extending your pavement’s lifespan, and affects not only the
appearance but safety as well.
The best time to give attention to cracks is early in their appearance to prevent small problems from becoming
larger ones. Having crack sealing done can, in most cases, double the life of your pavement and delay the need
for an entire resurfacing.
Asphalt Patching
When asphalt pavement ages, fatigue cracks can develop, spread, then deepen, which will lead to structural
deterioration. Tree roots, water leaks, and shifting soil are very common reasons that lead to the compromise of
your pavement. When this is aggravated by vehicule traffic, the compromised area allows water to wear away the
asphalt binder and then get into the base layer which leads to pavement material erosion and failure of the subgrade
under the asphalt. When this water freezes it will expand just like an ice cube in a freezer. When that water melts,
the asphalt sinks into the enlarged cavity which results in a pothole or a very sizeable crack that over time will
continue to expand.
At this stage, the most effective form of repair is to remove and replace the deteriorated area via patching. We
remove the affected asphalt and base, a cement-stabilization of the substrate is performed, and a completely new
asphalt surface is applied. This process can either simply remove the top few inches of the asphalt or it can go
completly to a full depth repair of up to 10” below the surface, depending on how far below the surface the asphalt
and sub-base have been compromised.
